Album: Monkey Man
Year: 1970
Written by: Toots Hibbert
From Rolling Stone:
Toots and the Maytals were already huge reggae stars — they were credited with coining the very word on their 1968 “Do the Reggay” — when they released “Pressure Drop,” in 1970. Rumor has it that the Maytals were Island Records president Blackwell‘s first choice over Bob Marley and the Wailers when he looked to sign a reggae group to his label. But “Pressure Drop,” and the band’s career outside Jamaica, didn’t really take off until the song was included on the soundtrack to the film The Harder They Come, in 1973, which introduced reggae to much of the world.
